Home Sweet Home

Posted by Krei Teylorr on December 12, 2008

My apologies, folks! It’s been a bit chaotic as of late, packing up my new life and now, trying to merge it with the old. I’ve arrived safely in the States and am in the process of trying to get my life together; I’ve got to unpack, re-organize, and among other things, find a J-O-B (I see the recession has shown no mercy on you guys. And I thought I was suffering over there with the exchange rate.)

I’ve enjoyed my time overseas tremendously, and although I’m glad to be home, I know I will miss London terribly. If anyone is considering traveling or living abroad, my best advice would be not to let anything, large or small, hold you back. Do it! Its one of the few things in life worth going into debt over.

Anyway, I just wanted you all to know I was safe and sound. Now back to our regularly scheduled program.

London Girls Like to Party All the Time!

Posted by Krei Teylorr on December 10, 2008

So much for packing!

No, I am packing. Seriously.

But packing your life away in a suitcase forces you to reminisce over past purchase greats and mistakes. And all my purchases in London have been well worth it!

Being in London has greatly enhanced my sense of style. Usually before I go out with friends, I blow $20 on a sequined lycra top that would look great with a pair of jeans, but not if I ever wore it again. The top would either disintegrate in the wash or get lost is a friend’s closet. Clearly not a worthwhile investment.

In London, the girls here dress, and I mean dress, to go to a club. You’d think Cinderella and her other ball loving Princess friends came to get down. And of course you know who Prince Charming is looking at!

I’ve purchased a few really cute party dresses since I’ve been here, which are great because they’re so versatile! For the price of three or four sparkly tops that I’ll never, ever wear again, I bought show-stopping dresses that I can dress up or dress down for any occasion. I always find that I’m running around looking for things to wear whenever I get an invitation somewhere, so these dresses will really come in handy in ’09.

Here are pictures of two dresses that I bought early November when one of my best friends visited. If it weren’t for her, I wouldn’t have them. I was so afraid to spend money (the exchange rate was no joke!). But I have ’em and they’re soon to be packed and unveiled in America:

I wore this dress with some red kitten heels and a matching clutch that I bought last year. I rocked it with a black cardigan which gave me a sort of modern preppy look. It was cute. I’d like to spice it up with some high heels and maybe a Blair Waldorf style headband. Here’s close-up of the clutch:

Here’s another dress I purchased that weekend, from a really posh store called River Island. I wore it to a Thanksgiving celebration a few of my classmates and I had:

I love it. It’s part of my What Would Rhianna Wear? (W.W.R.W?) inspiration series. I think Rhianna is the perfect style icon for me in the new year.

The sequins form a skyline on the bodice. Perfect for a night on the town in the big city.

There’s other dresses to share, and I promise to do it later. But right now, I’m off to pick up a pair of shoes I’ve been eyeing since I got here. I didn’t think I’d get them but if I;m still thinking about them months later, doesn’t that mean I really want them?

The Last Hurrah-Pt. 1

Posted by Krei Teylorr on December 10, 2008

Hey guys! As you may know, I’ve been in London for the past three months, taking classes and living the glam life. But it all comes to an end today!

Yes, today is my last full day in London. I can’t believe it. In the beginning, it felt as if this day would never come and now that its here, its surreal. This whole experience has been surreal. I still can’t believe I’m in London sometimes!

I’ll be spending the majority of my day packing, re-packing, and maybe doing some last minute shopping (as if I can afford it), so my posts will be few and far between today. But to make it up to you guys, I’ll be staying up all night waiting for my flight, so I’ll make sure to bring you the news you need to know! As well as some reflections on my time in London. I’m feelin’ a little nostalgic!

Catch ya later!

Tom Cruises Through “The Hills” and Leaves Some Advice for Speidi

Oh, the randomness that is Tom Cruise!

Cruise appeared on MTV’s “The Hills After Show” and offered advice for the show’s fakest favorite (cough, cough) couple, Heidi Montag and Spencer Pratt.

Cruise told hosts Jessi Cruickshank and Dan Levy that Pratt should have let his bride have  the big wedding she always dreamed of.

Watch the video here.

“If the girl wants the wedding, you gotta do the wedding,” Cruise said. “She’s gonna remember it forever. And you gotta make it a special occasion. Spencer, dude, you’ll realize this later.”

Easy for Cruise to say. He shelled out beaucoup bucks to give wife Katie Holmes a more than memorable wedding in Italy in 2006. Heidi, don’t even think about it. While a European wedding may boost ratings, you can’t afford it. Reality TV does not pay that well. Remember when Spencer borrowed money from Brody to buy your first engagement ring? Right…

Spencer quickly responded to the actor’s advice, telling, “You all know how I feel about big weddings, but if Tom Cruise says so, it must be true. If Tom’s the best man, we’ll have a big wedding!”

Rapper Kanye West took to his blog to announce that Black Eyed Peas member Will.I.Am. is set to produce the legendary band U2’s next album, tentatively titled “No Line On the Horizon”, to be released early 2009.

Evidently, not everyone agrees. Sean Michaels, reporter of one of the UK’s top quality papers, The Guardian, wrote, “Why would on earth would Bono and co hand over production duties to the man who brought the world My Humps?”

Guess its one of the things that makes you go “hmmm.”

Oprah’s “Dreaded 2-0-0”

Posted by Krei Teylorr on December 9, 2008

Oprah discusses her struggle with her weight in the January 2009 issue of O magazine

Oprah discusses her struggle with her weight in the January 2009 issue of O magazine

My favorite celebrity, Queen of Daytime TV Oprah Winfrey, has gone up again. Nope, not in ratings. In weight.

In the January 2009 issue of “O Magazine”, Oprah candidly discusses her shame over her recent weight gain. On the cover, Oprah, who has reached “the dreaded 2-0-0”, stands next to her slimmer self at a healthy 160 lbs. in 2005.

“I’m mad at myself,” Winfrey writes in the essay, which hits newsstands this Tuesday.

Since her break into daytime television in 1984, Oprah has publicly dealt with the fluctuations in her weight. She once took to the airwaves to proudly boast having lost 67 lbs. Within a few years, she had re-gained the weight she lost and then some, weighing in at her heaviest, 237 lbs.

“I’m embarrassed,” she writes. “I can’t believe that after all these years, all the things I know how to do, I’m still talking about my weight. I look at my thinner self and think, `How did I let this happen again?'”

Oprah cites frustration and a thyroid condition for her weight gain, in addition to poor care.

“When it comes to maintaining my health, I didn’t just fall off the wagon,” she writes. “I let the wagon fall on me.”

Oprah resolves to take better care of herself and, in true fashion, assist others who are struggling to control their weight as well. Beginning January 5, The Oprah Winfrey Show will host “Oprah’s Best Life Week,” a five-day series of advice on health, spirit, money and relationships to guide viewers through the new year.

A Vitamin a Day Keeps the Pimples Away

Posted by Krei Teylorr on December 7, 2008

I’ve got a TON of work to do so that I can finally free myself of the academic binds that the end of each semester wraps me in up to my throat! Just sitting here thinking of last minute tidbits and to-do’s before I head back to the States is making my head spin! More shopping, cleaning, packing, sightseeing etc. However, number one on my list is making sure I look like a star when I step off the plane.

I haven’t seen my friends and family in a little over 3 months. Sure there are albums on Facebook and the occasional e-mail full of pictures, but its a totally different scenario when you see someone in the flesh. I have that quintessential overly critical mom. The first thing she’ll say when she sees me is, “Oh, look at that bump on your forehead” (I’ve only had two pimples in my entire life, thank you) or “You’re gonna try to keep the weight off, right? Please?”

So in an effort to avoid my mom’s annoying comments, I’m turning to a tried and trusted beauty secret: vitamins.

GNC’s Hair, Skin, & Nails Formula (approx. $16.99) contain a surplus of the ingredients that are often found in hair, skin, and nails, giving them the boost they need to stay healthy and strong. I found out about these miracle pills from my favorite

GNC Women's Hair, SKin, & Nails Formula ($16.99,

GNC Women's Hair, SKin, & Nails Formula ($16.99,

beauty blog All About the Pretty and have been a fan ever since. Before taking the pills, my hair had fallen out completely on the left side (combination of stress and minimal maintenance on my part). After maybe a month or so of taking the pill plus slight changes in my diet, my hair had grown back, as healthy, lustrous, and voluminous as ever! And let’s not talk about my skin! I’ve always had healthy skin (as I’ve mentioned before, few pimples have ever graced my beautiful visage), but these pills brought a glow to my skin that had people wondering if I was pregnant or if things with my boo were heating up, or that I could’ve even had some kind of mystic tan station in my dorm room. I didn’t really pay attention to the effects the pills had on my nails, but I’m sure they received benefits too.

You’re advised to take one pill twice a day. But, I’ve found that combining the pills with a multi-vitamin such as GNC Women’s Ultra Mega Multivitamin (approx. $18), will only add to the effects. You’re also advised to take these pills twice a day, so taking one of each in the morning and in the evening with meals, should will do the trick.

GNC Women's Ultra Mega Multivitamin ($17.59,

GNC Women's Ultra Mega Multivitamin ($17.59,

Whenever I took the pills, I downed an entire bottle of water. The key to a healthy temple is hydration.

I’ve been slackin’ a bit (ok, A LOT) with my regimens and routines, but if I start taking them now, the effects will start to show through my skin by Thursday. I’m going to pick this routine up again and carry it on with me in the new year. No sense in waiting for January 1 to being my annual re-invent. I’ll start now (because I’m also giving up procrastination)!

Portobello Road & Market

Posted by Krei Teylorr on December 6, 2008

After spending three months in London, I’m ashamed to admit that I haven’t yet seen all that London has to offer. Of course I’ve seen all the famous attractions, like Big Ben and Buckingham Palace, but I was never pressed to sightsee because, well, I thought I’d have time. I definitely took the length of my stay here for granted. At times it felt like this experience was never going to end! But now that it is, I’m running around like a chicken without a head trying to cram in all the stuff people all over the world come to see so that I can have pretty pictures for Facebook and maybe even a funny story.

Today, a friend and I visited the Portobello Road Market, one of the more famous outdoor markets in London.  Portobello is most noted for its antique goods, though there is also a fresh food market as well. You can find lots of quirky gifts here. It’d be the perfect sort of thing for someone who has a very unique, or eclectic style (such as myself :-)). I bought a pretty purple dress for £15 and got two rings, which were £5 a piece (I’ll put pics up soon).

Saturday is the main shopping day and to say that it can get pretty crowded would be an understatement. You’d think that they were giving away money!

Take a picture under the Portobello Road street sign. Or you can buy a souvenir street sign for £5-10, depending on the size. Portobello Road

I thought that prices were reasonable, even though vintage goods can be pretty pricey. Usually, vendors will be open to negotiation. The guy who I bought my dress from wasn’t, but hey. It never hurts to try.

Where: Portobello Road Market

Gettting There: Central Line to Notting Hill Station  or Hammersmith and City Line to Ladbroke Grove Station

Why You’ll Like It: Unique finds, lively atmosphere

Why You’ll Hate It: Crowds, inclement weather (remember, its an outdoor market. Be sure to visit on a day when the weather is tolerable)

Does O.J. Really Deserve It?

Posted by Krei Teylorr on December 5, 2008

I just got home from a holiday party and saw the news about O.J. I updated my previous post and then went on about my business of doing, well, nothing.

I started surfing the ‘net for sources for my next post(s), when the headline “O.J. Simpson Sentenced to 15 Years” caught my eye. You know, we journalists can’t be wrong when telling a story, so I had to read a little more to make sure I wasn’t spreading false rumors.

Turns out, O.J. Simpson was sentenced up to 33 years in prison with the possibility of release after nine years (my story is still correct *whew*). broke it down rather nicely:

Simpson, 61, was sentenced to fifteen years for kidnapping and was also sentenced to at least another three years in prison for assault. He will be eligible for parole after six years on the kidnapping charges , meaning he will be eligible for release after nine years and could serve as long as thirty-three years. –

Although this sentence is a lot  better than the life sentence he was facing, I can’t help but think that the punishment really doesn’t fit the crime. I know there were weapons involved and malicious intent and a lot of  other crazy

O.J. Simpson listens as District Court Judge Jackie Glass reads his sentence at the Clark County Regional Justice Center in Las Vegas on Friday --Reuters/

little things the jury makes up considers when deliberating, but thirty-three years for an incident that lasted approximately six minutes?! Nah, that’s insane!

I’m sure people everywhere who agree with me will say that O.J. is being served a dual punishment for his alleged role in the murder of his wife, Nicole Brown Simpson and her friend, Ron Goldman, back in ’94, and getting acquitted for it to boot. The judge knows this as well, because she stressed that she was not sentencing him for any previous actions besides those for which he was currently on trial. Uh-huh. Whatever.

You know the jury was all white? Hmm-Hmm. This seems to be shaping up to be a good ol’ fashioned story of racism. However, can we even consider racism a factor anymore? The election of Barack Obama stood as a testament to America finally moving forward from its color coded past. But, I guess it takes awhile before it can really take effect.

Simpson’s attorneys are planning to appeal, arguing that a fair trial was nearly impossible after the 1995 murder “Trial of the Century” that left him a celebrity outcast.

Sure enough, the Goldman’s were there, happy to see “the monster behind bars”. Little consolation for them though, as they’ll never get their son back.

Pay attention to what’s written about this topic in the next few days. I’m pretty sure the racism card will be played.
